Joy Millea

Joy first tried yoga in 1999 as a means to stay physically fit during her first pregnancy, but didn’t begin a steady practice until Yoga Shakti opened their first studio doors in 2002. It was her curiosity about the philosophy seated in the ancient practice that drew her in the second time. Having been on a spiritual quest for some years, Joy found inspiration in the pages of the Bhagavad Gita and a home to study the sacred sciences at Yoga Shakti. Through the guidance and teachings of Diana Pipaloff and Master Yogi Jnana Nanda Bharati, she has enjoyed an ongoing journey of transformation, self realization and an awakening to the world around her.

Aspiring to point others towards their own journey, Joy began teaching yoga in 2004. She possesses a wonderful calm which permeates her classes and puts students at ease whether it’s their first class or their one-hundredth. Consciously guiding them through their practice, she offers both challenges and rest aiming to help each student discover their body’s strengths and weaknesses; their breath, which provides the foundation to their practice; and the combining of the two to create a balanced, peaceful feeling within.

Joy’s professional interest is in child development and behavior, wherein lies her educational background of psychology and early childhood education. She understands the incredible role children have in the world and the importance of giving them the guidance and nurturing they need to develop that role. She is a firm believer that it is easier to build a child up than to repair an adult and uses her knowledge of yoga and philosophy in her work, incorporating a yogic lifestyle in the young children she has daily contact with. Joy welcomes children of any age to her yoga classes as growing up with a yoga practice is far more effective than integrating one later in life.

Joy is registered with Yoga Alliance as an E-RYT200, RYT500; having completed her 200 hour Foundational Training and 300 hour Advanced Training at Yoga Shakti. Receiving direct, extensive and intensive training in meditation with her teachers, Joy maintains a daily meditation practice and is a guide for the Guided Shakti Meditation classes. In addition, Joy provides mentorship to up-and-coming yoga teachers. Yoga and meditation are Joy’s vehicles to self discovery and love; she is compelled to share this rich knowledge with anyone who wants the same.
